History of KAWS

The Korean Women's Association was founded in October 1984 out of a need to establish a common intellectual forum to academically establish and systematize women's studies in Korean society.

This society has taken the proposition of universality and specificity of women's studies as its foundation and, in order to unfold this proposition, held its first academic conference (1985) with the theme of "The view of women as expressed in religion" and "The nature and characteristics of women's studies through language". Since then, it has continued interdisciplinary academic activities on women's issues in Korea for the past 30 years, publishing academic journals, holding academic conferences, forums, and seminars.

This society was founded by Professor Yoon Hu-jeong of Ewha Womans University, who served as the first president and worked hard to launch the Korean Women's Studies Association. Since December 2024, Professor Bae Eun-kyung of Seoul National University has served as the president and is leading the 41st Women's Studies Association.
