GUIDE TO FOREIGN PARTICIPANTS

Welcome to the Philippines!

The 3rd Congress of Asian Association of Women’s Studies & the 9th National Conference of Women’s Studies Association of the Philippines will be held at the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center from December 9 – 12, 2013.

Here are some important pieces of information to facilitate your travel to Manila.

1.   AIRPORTS: Where to Expect to Land

Manila has two international airports that are both situated in Parañaque City of the Greater Manila Area:

·        The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) or Terminal 1. Passengers arriving and departing by the national flag carriers are expected to embark and disembark here. Examples of these are: Korean Air Lines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Japan Air Lines, and other flag carriers of other countries.

·        The Centennial Airport or Terminal 2. This terminal is home to Philippine Airlines. Its north wing is the designated area for passengers arriving or departing on international flights, while the south wing is for incoming and outgoing domestic flights.

2.   TAXI CABS: Taking a Cab to Your Destination

Two official designated airport taxis are available in both terminals: (1) the white cabs, and (2) the yellow cabs. The white cabs have fixed rate and are higher than those of the yellow cabs, which are metered-run. A white cab, for example, may charge P1,500.00 for trips up to UP Diliman, while a yellow cab meter may register from P500.00 to P700.00. As both cabs are endorsed by airport authorities, they are safer to take, especially for foreigners.

After collecting your baggage and going through customs:

·        Once you step out of the arrival area, you’ll find that white taxi cabs are available right at the exit point of both terminals

·        Looking for taxi signs, you’ll see that yellow cabs are queued at the taxi bay area several steps away from the exit point.

·        Inform a taxi stand worker, if there’s one, where you are going so he can assign a taxi driver who knows his way around the UP Diliman campus; this should avoid unnecessary hassles.

Safety Tips:

·        Make sure the taxi doors are locked once inside the taxi to ensure your safety, especially when you are stuck in a traffic jam.

·        Jot down the name and plate number of the cab (and the operator’s telephone number, if possible), just in case you may have found out later when it’s gone that you have forgotten some belongings inside the cab, etc.

·        Pay the driver only after getting your luggage out of the trunk. If you are satisfied with the service of a taxi driver, you may give him a tip of P50.00 or depending on the amount you want to give. It’s optional.

3.   ARRIVING AT UP DILIMAN

The only way for guests to get to UP Campus coming from the airport is to take the EDSA route that leads towards the University Avenue (front entrance) checkpoint. From this point, the driver must take the following routes to get to the University Hotel:

·        Turn left on Jacinto Street (the street just after the checkpoint)

·        Turn right on Magsaysay Avenue (where Jacinto Street intersects)

·        Turn left on Guerrero Street and go straight until reaching the University Hotel (on right side)

The other entrance is through the Katipunan Road (back of the University) if the vehicle (private car or taxi cab) is coming from C-5 Road.  But entrance is allowed only upon presentation of a UP ID.

There are several hotels within and near the University Campus. You may make your reservations directly or seek assistance of the Conference Secretariat.
